Bilingual jobs in Ottawa

Ottawa is one of the few Canadian markets where being bilingual pays in a literal sense. A designated bilingual role widens the set of employers open to you and, in the public service, gates access to part of the competitions.

"Bilingual" does not mean one thing

In the private sector it is usually a preference: you will serve customers in both languages, with no formal measure of your level. In the federal public service it is an objective criterion, written as three letters, and verified by a test the Public Service Commission administers.

The three letters cover reading comprehension, written expression and oral interaction. A BBB profile and a CBC profile do not open the same doors, and an imperative staffing position requires the level on day one, unlike a non-imperative one.

Who hires bilingual staff here

Beyond the departments, three groups of employers come up again and again: contact centres and customer service, which have to answer in the caller's language; the health network, where Hôpital Montfort operates in French and the other institutions look for staff who can switch; and education, from daycares to school boards.

Retail and food service downtown, in Vanier and in Orléans also post bilingual roles, often without asking for any test.

What to prepare

Put your real level on the résumé rather than a vague word. "Bilingual" on its own tells an Ottawa recruiter very little; "BBB, tested in 2024" or "comfortable speaking, formal writing in English only" is far more useful and saves you a wasted interview.

Expect part of the interview to switch languages without warning. That is the most common way a claim on a résumé gets checked, in the private sector as much as the public one.
