Senior Research Associate

Reports to: Director, Applied Research

Status: Temporary Part-Time (One Year Contract, 15 hours/week)

Location: Remote work, anywhere in Canada

Organizational Background

Funded by Veterans Affairs Canada, the Atlas Institute for Veterans and Families (formerly the Centre of Excellence on Post Traumatic Stress Disorders) was established in 2019 to provide better access to information, research, tools and expertise on PTSD and related mental health problems and illnesses. The goal of Atlas is to create knowledge networks with researchers, service providers, Veterans and their Families across Canada to increase expertise on military and Veteran mental health, suicide prevention and substance use disorders. Atlas will create new knowledge on Veteran mental health treatments that work and place it directly into the hands of mental health professionals and others working with veterans on a daily basis. Atlas will share evidence-based treatment protocols and best practices among the Veterans Affairs Canada network of Operational Stress Injury Clinics, the Canadian Forces Health Services, and with mental health professionals across the country.

First responders, their families and other Canadians living with and affected by PTSD or a related mental health problem will also benefit from the information and knowledge developed at Atlas.

Position Overview

The Atlas Institute for Veterans and Families is seeking a motivated, skilled researcher for a temporary, part-time Senior Research Associate role within its Applied Research team. Working in collaboration with project leads in the Applied Research team, the part-time Senior Research Associate will support a range of research activities, including data analyses, manuscript and presentation development, literature reviews and other duties as determined by the Director of Applied Research.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop and implement data analysis plans for active research studies, including proposing research questions aligned with study objectives, selecting appropriate statistical methods, preparing datasets, conducting analyses and interpreting findings;
• Prepare reports, manuscripts, and presentations on research findings, present research findings at conferences and/or events;
• Support the development of knowledge mobilization products related to research projects;
• Working cross-functionally to support dissemination of research and knowledge mobilization outputs;
• Investigate trends in mental health research and mental health issues affecting Veterans and their Families, identify common themes and present these in analyses and papers;
• Attend project and team meetings and provide input on research project decisions;
• Collaborate with external stakeholders, including Veterans and Veteran Family members, on research projects.

Skills and Attributes

• Experience supporting or leading research studies, including knowledge syntheses and systematic reviews, as well as expertise with advanced data analysis techniques;
• Exceptional writing skills and ability to communicate effectively, including public speaking, with a variety of audiences;
• Experience in results-oriented environments and in cross-functional teams;
• Demonstrated collaboration and interpersonal skills, within and across departments and with external stakeholders;
• Ability to work independently, to manage responsibilities and deliver high-quality work within established timelines;
• Knowledge of the Canadian mental health care sector and mental health research context;
• Demonstrated respect for understanding the experiences of Veterans and Veteran Family members, people living with mental health problems and illnesses, diverse populations.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., psychology, sociology, public health, epidemiology), with a PhD preferred or the equivalent combination of education and experience with a strong record of achievement;
• A minimum of two years' research experience, including experience publishing manuscripts and/or reports on findings;
• Knowledge of the research landscape in Canada, including granting/funding and publication processes;
• Successful completion of statistics courses at the graduate level, including understanding of and demonstrated ability to perform advanced techniques (e.g., MANOVA, SEM)
• Proficient skills with collaborative workspaces, including research software (e.g., NVivo; SPSS; R; Qualtrics; RedCap), business communication tools (e.g., Google Drive and/or 365/SharePoint), videoconferencing platforms (e.g., Zoom, MS Teams), and project management solutions;
• Strong organizational and time management skills;
• Fluency in French will be considered a strong asset;
• Familiarity and background working with military Veterans and Family members will be considered a strong asset.

Compensation

Salary: $46.39 per hour.

• Must be comfortable working in a research and/or medical lab environment;
• Physical/cognitive demands include use of typical office equipment, prolonged periods of sitting and working on a computer, high degree of organization, concentration and attention to detail;
• Psychological demands include deadline drive requirements, capacity to organize and prioritize own work, adaptable to change and ability to set and work towards performance, and working with research participants and community members with mental and/or physical health concerns.
