The Outaouais school network and its educational childcare services are among the steadiest employers on the Quebec side, and their entry rules have nothing in common with Ontario's a few kilometres away.

The teaching authorisation is provincial

Teaching in Quebec requires an authorisation issued by the province's education ministry. It is separate from registration with the Ontario College of Teachers: holding one does not give you the other.

Coming from outside Quebec, or from abroad, expect a recognition process first. It takes time and happens independently of any job application.

Substitute teaching is the real way in

The Outaouais school service centres recruit continuously for substitute work, and a good share of longer contracts come out of that pool. Demand is sharpest at the start of the school year and in January.

Educational childcare services are the other main entry route, with qualification requirements that differ from teaching.

Teaching on one side, living on the other

Plenty of people here work on one side of the river and live on the other. In education that gets complicated: each province has its own authorisation, its own collective agreements and its own salary scales.

Before applying on both sides, look at what recognition you actually hold and what the other province would additionally require.
